Ace the Technical Presentation

In the article this slide is likened to a bowl of spaghetti, as a type of presentation described as hypnotizing chickens. It is clear that the situation in Afghanistan is not the only situation that is beyond comprehension.

What the world needs now is certainly not more technical presentations, but more ace presenters of technical information.

This is the topic of the latest article in my column Creative Career Path entitled, Ace the Technical Presentation, which looks at how this is possible, and presents 3 examples of people who are master storytellers, as well as masters of highly technical subjects.

Five Channels of Communication

Life is not logical, at least for people who prefer to communicate through other channels.

You will reach more people if you know how to convey your thoughts and feelings flexibly through all five channels of communication, visual, auditory, kinesthetic, logical, and energetic.

TED Talks in Translation

 
Many of the excellent videos available on TED can be watched with subtitles, in dozens of languages. Thanks to The TED Open Translation Project, you can almost have your pick.

The TED videos on my new website at http://www.williamreed.jp can all be viewed in translation, although you have to know where to click to bring up the pop up menu and select your preferred language.

In order to view the subtitles, you have to click over the area just to the right of the oval start button at the lower left of the video screen, as shown here.

It then will display as follows:

And you can scroll down for many more language choices. Your video will then play with subtitles in the language of your choice.

Seminar Trailer on Developing Your Creative Genius

This two-minute video is a collage combining photos taken from my seminars on Creativity in Japan, Singapore, and the Philippines, for business and academic audiences, with some of the slides that I use in presentations, and in the background a audio recording from a keynote I did on Creativity for a Japanese company. 

To briefly summarize what I am saying on the video in Japanese, if we want to learn to be more creative, then it is best to learn from people who have a Creative Genius. While we may not approach the level of a Leonardo DaVinci, we can certainly do much better than we are doing now by emulating that Genius.

Our creative capacity is not determined by the size of our brain or number of brain cells, but rather by the distinctive networks and connections that we form within it. These become our filters, our lenses, our thoughts, and our insights. And by emulating Genius, we form and develop genius at our own level.

A great place to start is with one of my favorite books, How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci, by my good friend Michael J. Gelb.

Metaphor: the Magic Eye

The Magic Eye of Metaphor is the mind's eye.

Word pictures enable us to share our experiences instantly. Can you imagine a better way to bridge the communication gap? Metaphors are magic because they take you to times and places faster than any other form of travel.

The Magic Eye of Metaphor is one of the themes that I covered in my Keynote address at the All Japan Toastmasters Table Topics on November 1st. This is an excerpt from that talk, when I use a series of metaphors describe the winter cold river training we did every January 3rd in the Kinugawa (Angry Devil River), when the temperature was 7 degrees below zero Celsius!
