The character for BENEVOLENCE (慈), in Japanese pronounced itukushimi, carries nuances of affection, love, mercy, and benevolence. It is also the first principle of gratitude in Buddhism.
The upper part of the character shows radicals suggesting double intertwining threads, with the lower radical representing heart (心). The overall meaning is intertwining affection.
I painted this character for an exhibition to be held at the Carre MOJI Gallery on November 23~24 (Sun-Mon), the exhibition being open from 11:00~19:00. The gallery is located a few minutes walk from Exit B3 of Omotesando. Click on the link for a map to the gallery.
This work will be framed in a modern art frame with a black border for the outer frame, and deep blue matting for the inner border. I will be at the gallery some time in the afternoon on one or both days.
There will be over 60 works on display, and it is an excellent opportunity to visit Carre MOJI, meet some of the teachers, learn about the gallery, the school, and the unique approach to Shodo for the modern interior.
